7 Ways to Transition Your Winter Wardrobe to Spring

Spring is the time to lighten your layers and put heavy winter pieces away. Built on florals and pastels, spring wardrobes are a chance to have more fun with fashion. Knowing how to transition your clothing, footwear and accessories from winter to spring can help you prepare your outfits so that you’re not left wondering what to wear when the warmer temperatures arrive.

1. Swap Your Accessories

Many people focus on transitioning their clothing and footwear for spring but often neglect the accessories. Changing your winter accessories for lighter pieces, such as dainty, rose gold, high-quality everyday jewelry and stacking rings, ensures you have gorgeous jewelry versatile enough to wear with any spring ensemble. Additional accessories to swap include beanies for straw hats, chunky cable knit scarves for thin satin scarves and mittens for elegant formal wrist-length lace gloves.

2. Carry Layering Garments

The transition of temperatures from winter to spring is tricky. One day, it could feel like winter, and the next, more like spring. Depending on where you live, the shift may even happen throughout a single day. Prepare to encounter a mix of the two temperatures by stocking up on layering garments.

Instead of relying solely on long or short sleeves, have items like lightweight blazers and cardigans ready for every outfit. They let you adjust your comfort level accordingly whether you’re indoors or outside. If you’re getting new lightweight blazers, getting them professionally tailored so that they fit well and complement your body and style preferences is ideal.

3. Change Your Outerwear

It’s also time to change your outerwear. Start readying items like lightweight pea coats in favor of options like puffer jackets. Your spring outerwear should be one of the first things you buy for the season in case you need to get it professionally tailored. Adjustments may range from shortening sleeves to shortening the entire jacket.

4. Swap Out for Pastels and Spring Florals

Spring is about amplifying the color palette of your wardrobe, navigating from emerald green, red, navy blue and cream to peach, lavender, lime green, butter yellow and various other light and pastel hues. Embrace all the vibrant, cheerful colors you likely shied away from during winter.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention spring florals, which tend to be more dainty, pastel and whimsical than florals worn during winter. Have at least a few key floral pieces for every occasion, such as a dress or ballet flats, if you love the pattern, of course.

5. Separate Winter Apparel From Dual-season Apparel

One of the issues with transitioning your winter wardrobe to spring is that it can sometimes be challenging to pinpoint dual-season apparel. Winter is all about wearing heavy materials, which typically aren’t comfortable for the warmer temperatures. However, many pieces are ideal for both seasons, especially the in-between temperatures.

The winter items you decide to store away and what you consider dual-season apparel can vary depending on several factors, including your comfort level, how hot or cold you typically run and the structure of the individual garments. For example, while you can put away items like long-sleeved cable knit sweaters and fleece-lined sweatpants, continuing to wear your jeans and lightweight long-sleeved T-shirts can be beneficial.

6. Change Your Skirts and Dresses

You’ll likely put some winter dresses and skirts away until the next cold season, but you may have already been wearing certain ones that are ideal for spring thanks to accompanying accessories like fleece-lined tights. Separate your winter skirts and dresses from ones you can continue to wear into the next season, and then, pull out your spring dresses and skirts from storage so that they’re available when you’re ready to wear them. Continue to keep your fleece-lined tights on hand just in case you get an unexpectedly cool day but are still in the mood to wear a lightweight spring dress.

7. Combine Winter and Spring Pieces

Keep some of your favorite lighter winter pieces available in case the winter temperatures stretch into spring or you generally run cold. You don’t necessarily need to wear strictly winter or spring outfits; you can wear a combination of the two.

For instance, you can wear an oversized cream sweater with a black mini skirt, black slingback heels and a rose gold bracelet. Another option is a pink cardigan sweater with a white T-shirt underneath that you can pair with jeans, white sneakers and stud earrings. Whether you prefer more coverage on top or bottom, you have plenty of comfortable and fashionable options.
